SYNOPTICAL INFORMATION

Auroral activity is now summarized by the presence (or absense) of
ground-based sighting reports. Forecast conditions can be inferred through
the geomagnetic activity forecast section of the daily summary report of
solar and geophysical activity. Near real-time conditions can be determined

SUMMARY OF GROUND-BASED AURORAL ACTIVITY SIGHTINGS
               --------------------------------------------------

(Sightings are preliminary and may be unverified)

0020 UTC - (N44.28 W083.49) - East Tawas, Michigan
Comments: I was out with the telescope last night and noticed a
green glow in the northen sky. Twenty minutes later the glow turned
into green ribbons, waves, streaks and pulsations that shimmered
across the northern and western skies as well as overhea. What a
sight!! I have watched the Aurora in northern Ontario (walleye
fishing trips) and this matched the intensity, minus the colors, of
           those splendid views.

0030 UTC - (N44.25 W090.00) - SouthEast Wisconsin
Comments: Observed a nice (albeit brief) display during the very
early evening, but was unhappy to see the clouds move in around 8
p.m. local time. Was still able to observe diffuse greenish glow
through the clouds until they cleared (somewhat), but theremainder
of the show was quite faint.

0300 UTC - (N45.55 W089.24) - Eagle River, WI.
Comments: Spotted a moving, spotlight-like movement right above the
big dipper and headed out to watch. It stopped but started up again
a few minutes later in the same place, the tops of the rays were
all that was visible at the moment. Moving quickly ad over quickly.
Nothing on the horizon, only movement higher up. Geminid's are
pretty active, too. I know it's early but it must be on the way...

0319 UTC - (N49.50 W099.75) - Minot, ND
Comments: The aurora has been bright to dim off and on for the past
2 hours. It was really bright around 7:30 PM central time for a
good hour. It is still around.

0705 UTC - (N45.00 W091.50) - Chippewa Falls, WI West Central Wisconsin
Comments: No AU sightings tonight, BUT FROM 11:30 TILL 11:50 PM AN
AVERAGE OF 4 METEORS A MIN WITH SOME BRIGHT GREEN FIREBALLS DUE
           NORTH.

0825 UTC - (N36.75 W081.00) - Princeton West Virginia
Comments: wow my sky light up all of a sudden and there were alot
of green arc action, I watched one brighten up and then die down,
then there was glowing towards the north western area, right now i
has seemed its died down for now but i expect it to pik back up,
           theres still a glow

but i got really excited when I was seeing it pick up and was
           seeing northern lights once again!

Im going back out now! YES! i love this night!

1800 UTC - (N60.40 E013.00) - Torsby
           Comments: Sweden Torsby

1800 UTC - (N69.31 E016.08) - Andenes, Norway

1900 UTC - (N54.32 E000.91) - North Sea

2015 UTC - (N42.45 W085.02) - Bellevue, MI
Comments: Color variations were minimal. Basically color was a
light blue/green. Easily visible shifts and waves. Dull glow ran
as high as 80 degrees off horizon at one point in time. Many
           vertical streaks and jumps.

2100 UTC - (N48.75 E007.50) - Strasbourg FRANCE
           Comments: Thursday 14th 12 2006 (UTC+1h),late afternoon, there were
aurora alerts on web (high Kp values for next hours). Yes, there
had been an aurora warning concerning middle latitudes from 13 th,
because of Xflare. France was concerned, which is notfrequent. That
evening I left city, in order to avoid Strasbourg's light
pollution, higher because of Christmas illuminations. For a nature
reserve (Illkirch-Neuhof's forest), several km south of city's
centre. Here sadly was still some light pollution, notably
northwards. But less. Perfect weather conditions in forest during
my walk (from 19h30 to 22h15): sky without clouds, no mist,
windless and cool (slightly below freezing). I saw several white
fireballs, visible behind the trees. Some shooting stars also,
hardly visible. At the start of walk, I observed some glow in
various directions. Difficult to say if that was light pollution or
northern lights. I despaired of looking at some, taking advantage
of fireballs and the magical ambience of a forest at night, alone,
listening to the owl's hoots. Aurora borealis was out of my mind,
when I saw shadows of trees on the path. I thought of moonrise
immediately. There was no moon rising between the trees, above
horizon. But a white glow northeastwards, responsible for the
shadows on the path. No colour. And that did not last. Before
leaving, I still saw some glow in the same direction, but it was
greenish. I aimed to walk, to have a better view from a clearing,
but the glow vanished. Everything was difficult, that evening,
concerning aurora detection, because of light pollution. Arrived at
home at around 22h30. Kp values were 7 and forcasts concerning next
hours,8. After dinner, around 1h00, back to internet: red stars for
           high latitudes, also middle one

2224 UTC - (N58.30 W006.16) - EOROPIE, ISLE OF LEWIS
Comments: Nice to see the Aurora during a gap in the clouds, huge
green glow at about 40 deg N-E with a few reddish rays and small
curtains coming through, it only lasted about 10 to 15 minutes
before the clouds and rain came back, its blowing about 60ph here
at the moment so there may be other gaps later.

2240 UTC - (N59.10 E018.10) - Stockholm Sweden
Comments: Aurora seen through some holes in the cloud.

2300 UTC - (N00.00 W000.00) - Stanfordville, New York
Comments: The aurora showed as a bright white glow to the north
with diffused rays: digital photograph 20s showed green to purple
           coloration with more distinct banding

2319 UTC - (N59.92 W010.75) - Oslo, Norway
Comments: Started as very faint diffuse glow around 19:00 UT, after
23:00 UT the display became very spectacular.

2330 UTC - (N39.12 W082.14) - Albany, Ohio
Comments: Obvious greenish glow northward. Low but easily seen.
Brighter stars visible through through glow.

2335 UTC - (N43.74 E088.34) - St. Peter WI
Comments: Not very impressive.... for now.

2348 UTC - (N42.75 W084.75) - Galesburg, Michigan
Comments: Checked www.sec.noaa.gov and noted that the IMF finally
switched south. Went out and checked the sky and sure enought, a
faint green glow appeared. A diffuse green arc developed before
fading away a few minutes later. As of this report, a fint glow
was still noted just above the horizon. Nice to see the aurora
this far south during solar minimum.

2350 UTC - (N43.00 W088.00) - St. Francis, WI USA
