SYNOPTICAL INFORMATION
----------------------
Auroral activity is now summarized by the presence (or absense) of
ground-based sighting reports. Forecast conditions can be inferred through
the geomagnetic activity forecast section of the daily summary report of
solar and geophysical activity. Near real-time conditions can be determined
at: http://www.spacew.com/aurora/forumnotes.html. Current information
on CME impact predictions can be found at: http://www.spacew.com/cme.
SUMMARY OF GROUND-BASED AURORAL ACTIVITY SIGHTINGS
--------------------------------------------------
(Sightings are preliminary and may be unverified)
0030 UTC - (N36.15 W080.25) - east bend, north carolina, usa
Comments: I was observing with a telescope when I needed to change
batteries on my computer. Looking up, I was surprised to see two
distinct rays in the NW. At first I suspected they were clouds,
but they moved together across the sky, NW to NE. At on point, they
intersected the Milky Way between Cygnus and Cassiopeia. The rays
were approximately the same brightness as the Milky Way in this
region. These rays last 20-30 minutes followed by 10 minutes
without aurora. A very bright ray (well, for North Carolina) then
appeared, again in the NW. At one point, this ray extended well
past the zenith. Where it crossed the Milky Way, it was much
brighter than the Milky Way. This ray lasted approximately 45
minutes. Two more, much fainter rays followed the bright one. The
brightest three were clearly wavy and dynamic and some structure
could be seen, especially in the brightest.
Clearly, it is unusual to see aurora in this area. This is only
the fourth time I've seen aurora from this latitude in 20+ years of
observing.
